{"id":35665,"date":"2024-05-15T11:19:39","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T18:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/?page_id=35665"},"modified":"2024-05-29T11:48:20","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T18:48:20","slug":"hazardous-waste","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazardous Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EH&amp;S assists in the identification, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with the Solid Waste Disposal Act, The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/rcra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)<\/a>, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) federal regulations, and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/WAC\/default.aspx?cite=173-303&amp;full=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">173-303, &#8220;Dangerous Waste Regulations&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any materials that are classified as hazardous or may pose a threat to human health or the environment must be disposed of in accordance with the above regulations. Hazardous wastes contain one or more of the following characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-0\">Flammable<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-1\">Corrosive<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-2\">Reactive<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-3\">Toxic<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-4\">Halogenated Organic Compounds (HOC)<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/#haz_def-5\">Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These regulations do not apply to asbestos waste, radioactive waste, infectious\/biological waste, and other problem wastes that do not fall into the regulatory hazardous waste criteria. These wastes are covered by other regulations and are dealt with separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ewu-medium-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ewu-medium-gray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/information-for-waste-generators\/\">Information for Waste Generators<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who generates waste on campus has responsibilities according to Washington state law. Please read through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/ehs\/environmental-programs\/hazardous-waste\/information-for-waste-generators\/\">Information for Waste Generators<\/a>\u00a0page. Waste hazards have specific definitions and it is important that the correct hazards are selected on waste labels. point less than 140\u00b0F<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A solid that under standard temperature and pressure can cause a fire through friction, absorption of moisture, or spontaneous chemical changes, and when it catches fire it burns vigorously or persistently enough to create a hazard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A compressed gas that forms a flammable mixture with air either:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When the compressed gas has a concentration of less than 13% (by volume), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the flammable range is wider than 12% (for example, if concentrations of 20% to 33% are flammable the gas is This form must be submitted and approved before you can dispose of waste without using the Hazardous Waste Pickup Request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide all of your information, the pH and complete chemical composition of the waste, and how you want to dispose of it.
