Women’s and Gender Commission

Goals & Accomplishments

About the Organization

Since its inception in 1988, the Women’s and Gender Commission has partnered with stakeholders including, faculty, staff, and students to bring many accomplishments to Eastern Washington University’s campus, including:

• Successful proposal to hire the first independent Affirmative Action Officer at EWU
• Establishment of a comprehensive, licensed day care center at EWU for students and staff
• Improvement of lighting and other safety measures on campus
• Support for campus initiatives concerning gender violence prevention
• Diversity luncheons for students, faculty, and staff
• Baby Changing Stations in restrooms on campus
• Lactation Rooms for nursing parents
• Continual delivery of yearly forum report to President

Goal 1

Monitoring and responding to needs of gender-based violence issues by providing feedback on policy changes to ensure health and safety.

Goal 2

Ensuring that there is pay equity for all employees and a welcoming work culture, particularly for those who are caretakers, by studying pay schedules.

Goal 3

Creating and promoting a campus climate that is welcoming to all people regardless of their identity, which ensures a diverse educational culture and experience.

Annual Survey

In 2018, the Commission deployed its largest survey ever, via an online platform, where Commission members were able to quantify and analyze the results. Candace Martin and Jenny Kellogg were tasked with compiling a comprehensive report that found that many students, staff, faculty, and administrators required more education and training on issues such as micro-aggressions, gender pay gap, sexual assault resources, and gender identity.
