college-aged students, but <strong>it is preventable<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people who report having suicidal thoughts or who have made a plan have not fully decided to end their lives. It is also common for people who are feeling suicidal to show warning signs to family and friends. Because of this, it\u2019s important to learn the signs and symptoms and how to talk to someone if you believe they may be depressed or thinking about suicide. This knowledge can help you recognize when someone may be at risk and connect them with immediate help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to remember how to respond is the <strong>LEARN<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> acronym, developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/intheforefront.org\/resources\/learn-saves-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Forefront Suicide Prevention<\/span><\/a>. A strong sense of isolation is often present &#8211; listening openly and acknowledging their hurt is a powerful way to ease their isolation. <strong>Starting an empathetic conversation can be this simple:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m concerned about you. You don\u2019t seem like your usual self. What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to show empathy while you listen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listen with compassion. Show them you care by giving your full attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acknowledge their pain and their feelings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t judge. Avoid \u2018fixing\u2019 their problem. Realize that their perceptions are their reality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use your own words to reflect back what they have told you, and say, \u201cI\u2019m really sorry you\u2019re going through this.\u201d \u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Just listen<\/strong>.
