Gina Petrie, PhD, professor and coordinator of the English as a Second Language Program, has agreed to serve as the interim Director of Global Student Services in the division of Student Affairs.
Petrie brings a vast experience in international projects from around the world. As an English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State, she facilitated teacher education programs in Jordan and India. In addition to this work, Petrie has led international teacher education programs in Nicaragua, Mexico and Italy. She has led grant-funded programs to bring students and scholars to campus from countries such as Iraq, Chile, Germany, France, Sweden and England, and has worked with visiting scholars in her field, most recently a scholar from Brazil. In addition, she has experienced co-designing a study abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico. She began her career working with international students in intensive English programs, including EWU’s own ELI.
Reporting directly to Nick Franco, PhD, associate vice president for Student Equity, Belonging and Voice, Petrie will be responsible for directing, planning and developing services necessary for international students attending Eastern. She will also work to further develop international partnership opportunities, expand Eastern’s international recruitment efforts and enrich the on-campus experience for international students.
Since Petrie’s appointment begins Sept. 1, Kristina Guilfolye, director of Global Academic Programs and the Asia University American Program, will function as acting director of Global Student Services throughout the summer.
