At EWU, your student success advisor is your ally. Student success advisors offer guidance and support, and help new students adjust to life at EWU. Your student success advisor will help you register for classes, explore degree and career options, create an academic plan, and more. The following information is what you need to know as a new student.
Where to Start
You've made it to your Academic Advising Checklist! Click each section to make sure you are ready for your first quarter.
Freshman: At the beginning of March, we will send all confirmed freshman our New Student Questionnaire. Please complete the questionnaire as soon as possible. Your answers will help your Student Success Advisor create a schedule that fits your interests for your first quarter.
We will begin scheduling New Student Advising Appointments with students who have completed the questionnaire at the beginning of May. Make sure to regularly check your Eagles Email for your invitation to schedule!
*Freshman beginning in quarters other than fall will be contacted by a CAAR Advisor through their Eagles Email for an invitation to schedule an advising appointment to create a personalized schedule.

Before you can register for math courses at Eastern, we need to determine your math placement. The goal is to recommend a placement that considers your past experience with mathematics as well as other factors that indicate student success, such as your cumulative GPA. This placement may also be used by other courses in other subjects that have a math prerequisites (such as Chemistry).
At the beginning of April, we will open a Math Placement Self-Report Form, where you will use your high school transcript and AP, IB, or CLEP test scores (if applicable) to submit requested information.
Students starting prior to Fall 2021 who have not taken a college level math course must take the ALEKS Math Placement Test before they can register for math courses or any course with a math prerequisite. Students starting Fall 2021 or later who wish to challenge their math placement may take ALEKS.
Your Eagles email is the primary way that EWU will communicate with you. This includes your Student Success and Faculty Advisors. It is important to check your email frequently, at least once a week.

You can meet with your advisor as often as you would like. It is advised that you meet with your professional or faculty advisor at least once per term to discuss your progress and plan your classes for the next term.
We recommend meeting with your advisor before registration starts. This way, you can plan your schedule and resolve any holds or registration issues ahead of time.
Freshmen
Students with fewer than 45 completed credits (freshmen) are required to meet with their Student Success Advisor at least once per term. For this reason, freshmen will have a registration hold placed on their account each term. You must see your advisor to lift this hold.
Juniors
Students with 90 completed credits or more (juniors) must meet with their advisor to declare their major. Juniors will have a registration hold on their account until a major is declared.
Math Placement
It is recommended that all new students who have not completed a college-level math course take the math placement test. It is the most accurate way to make sure you take classes appropriate for your abilities.
For more information, and to see whether you qualify to opt out, see the Math placement test website.
English Placement
Most students will not need to take the English placement test, as ACT, SAT, IELTS or TOEFL scores, as well as high school grades, will determine placement.
For more information, see the English placement test website.
All students, regardless of program, are required to complete certain requirements to graduate. This includes:
