Designing with digital accessibility in mind is an inclusive practice that ensures individuals, regardless of their disabilities, have equal access to information and functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Title II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice published a new rule that revised the regulation implementing title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This revision included specific requirements and technical specifications for digital accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for EWU<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NEW: <\/strong>Monday, April 20, 2026 the Department of Justice announce an extension to the compliance deadline. All materials created and shared by EWU must now be accessible by <strong><em>April 26, 2027<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EWU must also demonstrate a <strong>good\u2011faith effort<\/strong> to remediate digital content created before that date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessibility is not optional\u2014it is a core part of how we serve students, employees, and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations on the path forward<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While all new materials must be made accessible after the deadline, here are a few suggestions to get you started in remediating existing materials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Review all files<\/strong> and remove anything that is outdated or unused.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can create archive folders in cloud storage to store these documents, but they <em>must not<\/em> be shared with anyone!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If an archived document needs to be shared again, you <em>must<\/em> remediate any\/all accessibility issues in that document before sharing it again!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remediate Scanned PDFs<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The easiest [and best] solution is to, whenever possible, replace scanned documents with more accessible materials.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the document is provided by a third party (e.g., textbook publisher, journal, etc), request the third party provide an accessible document.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work with your librarian to try and find alternative materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If replacing the document isn\u2019t possible, you will need to request an Adobe Acrobat Pro license and remediate the document.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This can be a time-consuming process!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add <strong>alt-text<\/strong> to all images!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify that <strong>headings<\/strong>, which provide a coherent reading structure for screen readers and the people who use them, are used properly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"wpo365_audiences":[],"wpo365_private":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-391","page","type-page","status-publish"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/391"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/6"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=391"}],"version-history":[{"count":14,"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/391\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":35649,"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/391\/revisions\/35649"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/inside.ewu.edu\/accessibility\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=391"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
